Ge-ge-ge no nyobou 4/15
Apr. 15th, 2010 12:05 pma.k.a. we've met, now let's get married!
Everyone is eating at the miai. Shigeru picks up a bowl of kai (shellfish), looks at it, and comments that it's hard to get in Tokyo. He talks a little with Genbee about his work on manga. Kinuyo (Shigeru's mother) tries to hush Shigeru. Genbee makes a joke, and there is general laughter.
Then the matchmaker sneezes. And they realize that the little oil stove in the corner has gone out. The sister-in-law tries to pump it -- the voiceover explains that the oil stoves at that time required pumping to get the pressure. Then Genbee tries. Fumie is fretting, making hand motions... and suddenly says let me do it and stands up. Everyone looks up and up at her...
Cut to the theme...
Pickup with Fumie standing up. After a moment of silence, Genbee says, "Fumie, sit down." And Shigeru says, "Let me try it." He pumps the stove, and it lights. Fumie looks at him smiling at the stove, and remembers the boy and the ghost in the forest (flashback to that time).
They are served soup. Shigeru has a flashback to Kinuyo (his mother) giving him directions about not slurping his soup. He picks it up carefully and sips quietly. Kinuyo watches, then slaps her thigh and looks at Shuhei (his father). He excuses himself, and takes the matchmaker outside for a consultation. Genbee looks worriedly at Fumie.
In the kitchen, Miyako (Fumie's mother) and the sister-in-law are looking at the trays of dishes they have brought back. "They certainly ate well." "That shows he is healthy." Mother asks what she thinks, and the sister-in-law says he seems nice.
The matchmaker announces that the Murai family would like to welcome Fumie into their family... They want a marriage. Shuhei suggests January 30, Genbee asks if they mean next year, and they say no, this year. The matchmaker remarks that everything goes fast now. Shuhei and Kinuyo bow and ask "Please?" Shigeru has to whack his false arm, but he bows, too.
Next we see the Murai family outside walking in the street. Shuhei asks Kinuyo whether that wasn't too fast. What made you decide? Kinuyo answers that watching Shigeru drink his soup quietly convinced her. What do you think? They remark that she is very tall... with a flashback to her standing up...but Shigeru is mumbling about white...
And as they walk off, we see a white sheet of paper flying across the scene. This is one of the manga characters from Ge-ge-ge no kitaro -- an animated scroll, with eyes and hands, who flies (and sometimes carries Ge-ge-ge places).
Meanwhile, Fumie is at the household shrine, talking to grandmother. Flashbacks of her eye peeking through the door, Shigeru drinking soup, and Shigeru saying, "that's good" about her riding a bicycle.
Next, the Iida family is gathering at the dinner table. The 30th? Why such a hurry? They need to get back to Tokyo for work. But... he did get the stove started... lots of chitchat and worry, then Genbee says we should ask Fumie, and does. "What do you think?" She says, "Yes." Miyako says, "Are you sure? Think about this before you rush in." Fumie says, "Despite my worries, yes. I'm convinced. Please?"
We see the Murai family at home. Shuhei is on the phone. "Good!" He hangs up. "Done! They've agreed." He gets his newspaper out and starts reading, commenting "We're going to be busy." Mother starts yelling for Shigeru.
Shigeru is in another room, drawing with a pencil. He is sketching the white sheet character. Flashback to Fumie standing tall, and replaced with the manga character. He adds eyes, and chuckles.
Next, Miyako is on the phone. The brothers are scrambling. Miyako gets off and tells Fumie that she goes to the beauty shop tomorrow (26th). Fumie writes it on the calendar, along with a red circle on the 28th and 30th. Wedding bells in store?
To be continued...
