mbarkera.k.a. Foxes crying in the dark?
Fumie is walking in a dark hallway. She stops in front of a door and says, "Is it okay if I come in?" Silence. She goes in, and finds Shigeru sleeping. She picks up the suit coat from the floor and starts to fold it. Then she sees the false arm...
On to the theme...
Kuniyo is darning a sock. She wonders out loud, "Do you think she'll be OK?" Shuhei asks what she means, and she says Fumie is leaving her family, and going to Tokyo. Shuhei says it's late, and you were the one who was pushing...
Fumie watches as Shigeru rolls over on his back. She sees his empty sleeve. There is a flashback to her tapping his false arm with the fan when the cameraman was taking pictures.
Fumie touches his false arm. She comments to herself that this is his left arm. Then she looks at him laying under the futon, and says, "You've had a hard life." She tucks his right arm under the futon.
Next, Fumie is sitting on the balcony outside. She hears the sound of the river, and says that must be the mountain over there. Shigeru wakes up, and she says, you must be sleepy, and he says no. She starts to say something formal, and he says Please relax. Then he asks if she has ever heard the foxes' cry? She asks if there are foxes, and he tells her that his grandmother said there were. [flashback] Shigeru as a young boy, with rain falling in the sunshine. Grandmother says that's a sign of the kitsune (foxes). Then she says you can hear the foxes cry, and imitates the sound. [end of flashback] Shigeru imitates the sound. Fumie looks at his empty sleeve, and apologizes. He laughs, and says oh, this is the way I usually am. You've just seen me with that false arm. He looks around, and finds it on top of the dresser. You put it away? I forgot. Kinuyo told me to wear it all day today. But I don't usually use it.
Then he peers into the dark, and says, "Did you hear the foxes' cry?" Fumie says no. He cups his ear and shuts his eyes. "Shhh. Listen." Fumie follows suit. After a moment, she says, "I don't hear..." Then she hears a snore. And looks over to see Shigeru sleeping, sitting up.
The voice over says she isn't really going to meet Shigeru today. But it starts to snow outside. And the voiceover says Fumie peered into her future that night...
Next, Fumie is saying, "It's morning!" to a sleeping Shigeru. She shakes him. He doesn't respond.
Fumie goes into the kitchen. Shuhei greets her, and asks if she wants coffee? He is brewing it, with a glass brewer. Kinuyo is also bustling around. Fumie says let me help, and they respond in chorus not today.
At the breakfast table, Shuhei has toast, scrambled eggs, and coffee. Kinuyo has grilled small fish, rice, and miso soup. And that's the first topic of conversation, with Shuhei saying that coffee is a proper breakfast, while Kinuyo says no, rice is best. Fumie says she couldn't wake Shigeru, and Kinuyo laughs and says he always sleeps in. When he was in school, she always had to take him in because he was late. Fumie asks how did he make it to radio taiso in the summer? (morning exercises to the radio music). Shuhei laughs and says, "I don't think he knew they did that!"
Next, Kinuyo is picking up the dishes. Fumie asks about the kitsune (foxes) in the area. Kinuyo looks startled, and says there are no kitsune around here. Shuhei says yes there are. Stone ones. Kinuyo says he's always joking. Fumie explains that Shigeru was talking about grandmother.
Shuhei gets the newspaper out, and says maybe he'll go to Tokyo today for the kabuki theater. Kinuyo says no, we don't have money for that. They get into an argument, with Kinuyo throwing a towel onto the table. Fumie is standing there, looking back and forth. Then Kinuyo goes into the kitchen. Shuhei sits down, singing a bit of kabuki.
Fumie tries to help in kitchen. Kinuyo starts giving lots of advice, such as when you buy vegetables in Tokyo, wash them very well with lots of soap. Then Shuhei says we better get Shigeru up. Fumie asks if she should do it, and Kinuyo says no, I'll do it. She leaves, and Shuhei says, "She has lots of advice about little stuff. Don't worry, a little bit at a time, you'll be fine." And we hear Kinuyo yelling upstairs.
The camera shows us Kinuyo yelling at Shigeru. She's shaking him, then pulls the covers off. He curls up in the sunshine.
Next, outside the front door, Shuhei and Kinuyo say goodbye to Shigeru and Fumie. Shigeru has a bundle, while Fumie has her small blue suitcase. Kinuyo looks at the bundle and says, "Put your false arm on. You never know who you're going to meet." Shigeru says he doesn't need it. Then Kinuyo says, "Take care, and be healthy." And she looks at Fumie and says, "Don't forget. Remember everything I told you."
The voiceover says we're off to Tokyo...
