aka Making a life together
This episode started with Shigeru looking around his cleaned up workroom and yelling, "Don't ever touch my workroom!" Fumie said, "All I did was straighten up a little." He noticed that a stack of sketches -- the crumpled up sheets from the floor, flattened out -- were in the trashcan, and grumped about, "You were going to throw away my sketches?" Then he went to the bookshelves, and started pulling at the books. "You straightened the books? They were in just the right order..." Fumie said, "Just tell me what I can do?" He said, "Just don't touch anything."
The theme ran...
Fumie, almost in tears, said, "If you never talk to me, how can I know what to do? All I want to do is make a life together. Just talk to me!"
Shigeru slid the doors shut, hiding in his work room.
The upstairs guy went by the door of the kitchen, and asked. "Is anything wrong?" Fumie said no, and he went on. Fumie started making rice, then realized that she needed to go shopping. She looked at the closed doors of the work room and told them, "I'm going shopping."
Meanwhile, in the work room, Shigeru was flat on his back, thinking. He looked at the books, then noticed a vase of wildflowers in the corner. He smiled at the flowers, and said, "She's even put flowers in here." He got up and opened the doors, but Fumie wasn't there. He looked around the room, and at the kitchen, with various improvements, and said to himself, "Everything is all cleaned up." Then there was a flashback to Fumie saying "All I want to do is make a life together."
And at the shopping center, Fumie called her sister. Family okay? Is anything wrong? Well, no...just wanted to ask about the family. She finished the phone call, and turned away. The old woman from the rental book store is chasing a man, complaining about where are you going? He said Gambling! The old woman said how can you do that? He said I'm addicted, and walked off. The old woman said, "What a worthless son..." As she turned away, she suddenly bent over, in evident pain. Fumie rushed up, and asked what's wrong. The old woman said rheumatism, and tried to walk. Fumie ended up carrying her on her back.
At the rental book store, Fumie burned incense on the old woman's arm (okyu -- a very popular remedy). She smiled, almost gleeful with the relief. Then the rental book store owner and the old woman got into an argument over the son -- who is the owner's husband.
[Okyu, burning incense on the arm, or some other part of your body, is a very common remedy in Japan. It's related to acupuncture. The incense is usually loose pellets, like sand, that are piled up in a little mound and lit. Sometimes there is a slice of garlic underneath, but it's also often just piled on the skin. And taken off before it burns too much.]
Next, the former thief came in and said, "I've finished with the books." The owner said, "Oh, okay, wait a minute." She got out a small envelope and gave it to him. He said, "What's this?" She said, "It's your pay. It's not much." He said, "You can't. I tried to steal from you, and you've taken me in, fed me, and now you're going to pay me, too?" He tried to give the envelope back, and the owner pushed it back into his hands. "Really, it's not much. Take it, you earned it."
The three young girls came rushing in. They had heard that something happened to the old woman, and chatter away, "Oh, you're alive? What happened?" Then they looked at Fumie and said, "Oh, it's you again." The old woman growled, "Be polite, she is a master of incense burning." (okyu no meijin)
The book store owner said goodby to Fumie outside, thanked her for helping, and invited her to come eat sometime. She laughed and said, "The food will be good. I ran a cafe here before, and everyone came to eat. But I think the bookstore is better business."
When Fumie returned home, she glanced in the open doors of the work room. "Oh, Shigeru is out? I wonder where he went?"
Fumie hung the wash outside, and looked for Shigeru.
As it got later in the day, Fumie talked to the picture of her grandmother. "He was so angry. Do you think he just left?"
Shigeru's voice called from outside, "Come out and look!"
Fumie found him outside with a new bicycle. He smiled, "This is for you. It'll be easier to shop. And when I'm not working, we can ride together?" As she stared, he asked, "You do ride, right?"
Fumie said, "You went to buy that?" Shigeru said, "Yes. Why, isn't it..." She shook her head, as tears rolled down her cheek. "I was just surprised." He said, "It's just a bike."
That was Shigeru's first present to Fumie...
