The episode started with flashbacks -- a clip of Sugiura caressing the kamishibai box, Fumie saying that she wasn't sure where he went, but he had been asking about pawnshops.
The pawnshop owner said, "I'm really sorry. I just can't pay you money for it."
Shigeru and Fumie bicycled to the front of the pawnshop. They hurried inside and asked, "Did you see a man with a kamishibai box?" The pawnshop owner said, "Yes, but I couldn't pay him anything for it." Shigeru and Fumie walked back out of the shop, and looked around, puzzled. Shigeru said, "Where would he go?" Some kids ran by, and Fumie remembered Sugiura looking at the temple and saying he wished he could do kamishibai there. She said, "Just maybe..."

[Let me take a moment here to talk about translating. In the show, they are using a word -- dogu -- which really means tool, and I've been translating that box. But it's more than a box. Imagine a small set of drawers -- I think one deep one and two shallow ones making the body of the box. On top, there's a frame that can hold a stack of cardboard-backed paintings. The frame is hinged, so that it can fold down on top of the box for carrying or stand up for a show. The frame had wooden molding around the edges, fairly sturdy but ornate. So it is a tool, for doing kamishibai shows. Apparently they used to strap this to the back of a bicycle, although he's carrying his in a large cloth.So box is deceptive, but tool doesn't really sound right either.]
Shigeru and Fumie ran up the stone stairs near the temple. Then they looked quickly around the temple. Sugiura was sitting, with his bundle on his lap, where Fumie and he had talked the day before. Shigeru asked, "What are you doing here?" Sugiura stared straight ahead. "I tried to sell my box. I can't sell it. It's so heavy, and I've carried it every day, and no one wants it. It's so important to me, but not important to anybody else." He shook his head. "Where should I go? I was going to ask you for money to go to Kyushu, but I couldn't even do that." He looked at the bundle. "Kamishibai is dead, isn't it? It's all over, I guess."
After a long pause, Fumie said, "Come home with us now. You must be hungry, aren't you?"
Back in the house, Fumie sat in the kitchen and looked at the picture of the fox changing leaves into money. Then she took a leaf and put it in her wallet. She held the wallet in her hands, and prayed. Shigeru, sitting in his work room, turned to watch. She opened the wallet. She took out some folded bills, and straightened out the bills in her hands. 1000 yen notes.
Shigeru said, "Kitsune no koban!" (the fox's gold pieces)
Upstairs, Shigeru put an envelope with the money in it on the floor and pushed it to Sugiura. He said, "Here. We want you to have this." Sugiura pushed it back, "I can't take your money." Shigeru said, "Please, don't sell your kamishibai box. You've carried it everywhere, and it knows everything that you've seen. It's your friend, really. All those kid's faces, enjoying your shows -- it remembers them all."
There was a flashback to Sugiura and the kamishibai box giving a performance for the kids.
Sugiura bowed, kneeling on the floor, his head and hands down. Shigeru returned the bow. Then Sugiura took the envelope.
The voiceover told us that he left that day for Kyushu, which is the southernmost island in the main group.
Later, in the kitchen, Fumie asked Shigeru, "What do you think he will do? More kamishibai?" Shigeru said, "Yes. That's all he knows." Then he muttered to himself, "Just like me, I guess." Then he looked at Fumie, "I guess I better get back to work." Fumie said, "I think I should, too."
The next day, Fumie was talking with Michiko (the bookstore owner), Kiyo (her mother, the old woman at the bookstore), and Taichi (the teenage boy) in Michiko's dining room. Fumie was asking about foods and recipes, and writing things down in her notebook. Kiyo said, "Why are you suddenly so interested in foods?" Fumie said, "Well, I thought if I worked at a restaurant or started one, it would help." Kiyo said, "At least you've come to the right place. But Taichi, I thought you had questions for her?" The boy looked embarrassed. Michiko laughed, and said, "Ever since he found out that you're Mizuki's wife, he's suddenly turned shy."
Michiko's husband, Masashi, came in. Michiko greeted him, and said, "Oh, good, have you met Fumie?" He looked at her. Michiko said, "She's Mizuki's wife." He said, "Oh, the war books." Then he walked out, saying, "I think I'll lay down. Not feeling well."
Kiyo muttered. "I guess he can't help it. The war took something out of him. We all three used to work hard." Fumie said, "Um..." Kiyo said, "Yes, when we ran the restaurant. But now, he's always sick, and I've got rheumatism, so Michiko has to run the store by herself." Michiko came back in and said, "What old stories are you telling now?" Kiyo said, "Well, you've been running the rental book store for two years now." Michiko said, "And it's good business." Kiyo said, "But you make the money and he just spends it." They laughed.
Just then, someone called from the store area. Michiko hurried out, and her voice drifted back, greeting Maiyumi (a teen girl). Taichi started to sit up, and Fumie and Kiyo said, "Is there anything wrong?" He sat back, mumbling, "No, no."
In the store, the teen girl said, "I thought maybe you could help me. There's a... well, a letter..." Michiko said, "Oh, a love letter?" The girl said, "M...maybe. But the problem is that I don't know his address. And what I thought, well, maybe, if you could give it to him?" Then she looked around, "He...he comes in here a lot." Then she laid the letter on the counter in front of Michiko. "His name is Taichi Kobayashi."
In the dining room where they had heard all this, Taichi looked shocked.
In the store, Michiko came around the counter and put her arm around Maiyumi's shoulders, and quietly urged her to come outside, let me talk to you.
Meanwhile, Shigeru took a deep breath and looked at the door of another publisher. He tapped on his shoulderbag, and went inside. As he stepped through the door, he said, "Hello?" But there was no one in sight. He started to poke around. A voice from a blanket on the couch said, "What do you want?" Shigeru said, "I'm here to show you my manga." The blanket shifted, and the voice said, "Who are you?" Shigeru said, "I'm Mizuki. I draw the Kitaro manga." A figure pushed back the blanket and jumped up. He grabbed a shoe and yanked it on. "You're Mizuki! Great! I've been waiting for you." The voiceover said, "It seemed as though Shigeru was destined to be there."
The episode ended with a medley of upcoming bits, very fast. Impressions -- there was something about a manga club, Shigeru was signing handouts, Genbee (Fumie's father) was talking, Michiko smiled, Shigeru was sitting in an empty street, and Fumie announced "Manga is what's important!"
