aka I get baby with a little help from my friends

Fumie was at the doctor's office. The doctor shuffled papers and said, "Your weight is low, and you really should be on a salt free diet. You're 30 years old? Maybe we could put you in the hospital now?" Fumie looked very worried. "Oh, I'll take care of it. Just tell me what I need to do." The doctor shook her head. "Well, if you come in regularly for checkups, maybe it will be all right." Fumie bit her lip. Would it be all right?

Later, at the house, Fumie was sewing in the kitchen when someone called from outside. "Excuse me? Dan-dan lady calling?" Fumie answered, and the wife turned cosmetic sales lady came in. She looked at Fumie and said, "You're very large, aren't you? How is pregnancy?" Fumie said, "Well, to be honest, I'm scared. The doctor said... and I don't have anyone to talk to about it!" The wife said, "Oh, now, just relax. First, here, let's move the table." She pulled the table aside, and had Fumie sit on the floor. "Now you should get your husband to do this, but leg massages are very important." She rubbed Fumie's knees, and glanced around. "Where is Shigeru, anyway?" Fumie said, "He's out talking to the publishers today."

Fumie said, "It's just one more month, and I don't really have anyone to talk to or ask questions. My mother is too far away, and my sisters aren't nearby either." The wife patted her leg and said, "You're very healthy, so your body and your baby will be okay, I think." Just then, Fumie jerked, then rubbed her stomach. "The baby kicked." The wife chuckled. "See, your baby agrees with me."

Later, Fumie was making dinner. She started to dip a little salt out, then said to herself, "No, low salt. But how do I tell how much salt I'm getting? And how do I make it tasty, too?" A voice called from the entryway, and then Michiko and Taichi came in. Michiko carried a pot. "I heard that you needed some low salt food, so I made this. Now just sit down." Fumie sat down, and Michiko started cooking. Michiko turned, holding up a small bottle. "By the way, instead of salt, you can use vinegar to make things tasty. Oh, and here's a bunch of low salt recipes." She took a thick wad of paper out of her pocket and handed it to Fumie.

As Michiko cooked, there was a bustle at the doorway, and the three wives from the stores came in. They each had a bundle. The wife from the public bath who had become a cosmetic saleslady opened her bundle and said, "I thought maybe you could use these. They're old bathrobes from the bath. But they're soft, and would be good for the hospital." Another wife opened her bundle and held up a stack of towels. "Babies always need towels, and these were just taking up space." The third wife pulled small sweaters out of her bundle. "These are used, but your baby will stay warm." They looked at Fumie and said, "Really, if you have any questions, just ask us. We'll be happy to help." Taichi stepped up to the table. "I want to help too. So if you have anything to carry or move, ask me, okay?"

Shigeru came in and looked at the group around the table. Fumie looked at him and said, "Can you believe it? They all brought things for the baby." They assured him that it was all old stuff, and nothing special. Shigeru nodded. Inui, the strange fan, came in, and said, "Ah. One more present for you, then." He reached into his bag and pulled out a small box. He set it on the table in front of Fumie.

Fumie looked at the box. Then she opened it. Inside, nestled in paper, lay a bright colored pony, red and white, with a fancy decoration on top. She held it up, and Michiko said, "A temple blessing? For good birth?" Inui nodded.

Early one morning, Shigeru lay sprawled in the bedding. Fumie opened the door and looked at him. He mumbled, "Huh? What?" Fumie said, "I'm just going to the doctor for a checkup. You sleep in, you were up late last night." Shigeru mumbled, "Okay. Take care." He rolled over, and Fumie closed the door.

As Fumie left the house, a yawning Shigeru bumbled out of the house. Fumie said, "What are you doing? You were up so late last night." Shigeru said, "Well, I woke up. I'll sleep later. But we can visit the doctor together." He scratched his head.

As they walked down the street together, a neighbor came out with a little girl. They said, "Good morning." The little girl took something from her mother and handed it to Fumie. The little girl said, "Merry Christmas." Then she turned and walked away with her mother.

Shigeru looked at the small paper Santa Claus that the little girl had handed to Fumie. "That's right, it is Christmas Eve, isn't it?" Fumie said, "I can't make a cake. But maybe this afternoon, I could make hotcakes for Christmas." Shigeru chuckled. "That sounds good."

The waiting room at the doctor's office was decorated, with a small tree and lights and strings of beads. The pregnant women and children shuffled around the room. As one pregnant woman sat down beside him, Shigeru's stomach growled. He got up, and went outside.

He stood outside, and muttered to himself, "I really don't belong in there." Then Fumie came out. "Oh, there you are. There's a big problem." Shigeru gulped, "What? What's wrong?" Fumie said, "The doctor says I'm going to have the baby very soon." Shigeru said, "So should we get the hospital clothes..." Fumie shook her head. "No, she said I should go to the hospital now."

In the hospital, Fumie lay on a bed under a white blanket. Shigeru came in. Fumie said, "The doctor said it would be soon. Can you go home, and pick up the hospital clothes from the dresser? Oh, and could you let my sister know, too?" Just then, she winced and crumpled into a ball. Shigeru said, "What's wrong?" She mumbled. "Just a contraction. Hurry!"

Shigeru ran into the hospital with a bundle in his hands. He stopped the first nurse that walked by, and asked, "Is it born yet?" The nurse looked at him, "What?" He panted, then said, "I'm Murai. Fumie... is the baby born?" The nurse shook her head. "Not yet. But soon." He lifted the bundle. "I've got clothes. Where should I take them?" The nurse pointed to a bench. "Why don't you wait right there?"

Shigeru sat down, and clutched the bundle. He looked at the door in front of him. He tried to take deep breaths.

Fumie's sister came in the front door of the hospital. She looked around, and started to walk over to where Shigeru sat.

There was a loud baby's squeal from inside the door. Shigeru looked up and said, "It's born!"

Moments later, Fumie sat in a bed. Her hair was loose around her head. A nurse came from the other room, carrying a wrapped bundle. "Would you like to hold your baby?" Fumie nodded, and took the bundle. Sleepy eyes blinked at her.

Shigeru opened the door and stepped inside. The nurse looked at him. "You must be the father. Her cheeks are just like yours." Shigeru looked at the baby, then puffed his own cheeks up. The nurse said, "Your baby is a girl." Shigeru said, "Oh. A girl. Right." Then he shook himself. "You've worked hard, mother." Fumie looked up at him. She smiled. "Dan-dan, father."

The baby turned its head and its lips worked.

The episode ended with a medley of upcoming bits. Fumie telling Shigeru to go ahead and do it, a group of people with banner proclaiming "No Manga!", Michiko and the wives saying that something is cute (probably the baby?), the realtor examining a 10,000 yen note as if he can't believe it, Shigeru in a pouring rain, Fumie with the baby strapped on her back, and Shigeru saying, "Babies are noisy, aren't they!" I think.

Seems like just last week, we discovered she was pregnant. Time sure flies.

I was curious if this young woman is getting coverage in Japan: http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/article/2010-05-29/teenage-female-japanese-knuckleballer-makes-us-pro-debut

It seems as if Eri Yoshida has earned her place on the team. I'm not impressed by token players, but she seems to have real talent at the game.

Um -- I have to admit, I don't follow the baseball news here? There is a lot of it, but... not something I keep up with. So I'm not sure.

Baseball isn't everyone's thing...I wouldn't have paid much attention to it but Eri Yoshida seems like such a sensible young woman--not at all publicity seeking as far as I can tell. I was just curious what Japan made of her breakthrough, but maybe it isn't that interesting there as here.

Thanks for the updates!
