Fumie's sister told her that last night Takashi, Fumie's younger brother, met his girlfriend in the store. And this morning, he is talking to Genbee. Fumie's sister laid out cushions on the floor, and Fumie set Aiko on them.

Meanwhile, Miyako, Fumie's mother, brought tea to the room where Takashi faced Genbee. Genbee said, "So you are going?" Takashi said, "She is the only daughter of their family." Genbee said, "What about the store?" Takashi looked down in his lap. "I don't know." Genbee stood up and looked at the picture of his mother sitting in the family shrine. "This was a small store, but your grandmother Toshi worked hard to make it grow. I've worked hard to make it grow. You're just going to throw all that away?" Takashi squirmed. Genbee glared at him and suddenly barked, "I can't forgive that."

Miyako carried the tea cups back into the kitchen. Fumie said, "So what's happened?" Miyako said, "Oh, you're back. Well, Takashi told Genbee that he had to go, and Genbee said he can't forgive him."

Just then, there was a loud commotion from the store. Miyako and Fumie rushed to see what was happening. They found Takashi pulling on Genbee, who announced, "I'm going to go over there and tell her never to come near you again." Takashi ducked past him, and braced himself in the doorway. Genbee towered over him, glaring. Takashi yelled. "I'm sorry, but I am going to go with her. She's the most important thing to me. If you make me choose, then I choose to go with her."

As Miyako and Fumie stared at this confrontation, a little grandson rushed out, crying. "Aiko swallowed a marble!" Fumie and the others raced back into the other room, where Fumie picked up Aiko and started pounding her back. The grandson's mother, Fumie's sister, said, "How did she swallow a marble?" The boy said, "She just picked it up and swallowed it." The mother slapped him. "And you let her?"

Genbee told Takashi to get a doctor and he ran off. Fumie pounded on Aiko's back, but she kept choking. Genbee looked at Fumie and said, "Stick your fingers in her mouth." She did, and pounded again. Suddenly Aiko coughed, and spat out the marble. She started crying, loudly.

Takashi ran back in, dragging a doctor.

Later, Genbee sat in front of the household shrine. Miyako sat nearby. He rang the small chime, clapped his hands together, and said, "I'm sorry, Toshi. I got confused. I was thinking about the house, and the business. They're not that important. Our family is important. And they each need to follow their own road."

Genbee went into the store. Takashi was polishing small bottles. Genbee asked, "So, is that for the special order?" Takashi nodded, and continued polishing. Genbee picked up a big bottle and started polishing it. "I've been thinking. You need to go ahead with your girlfriend." Takashi froze, then put down the bottle and looked at Genbee. "Father?" Genbee shrugged. "I still haven't forgiven you, but...we'll work out something."

Later, Fumie was sewing on the old sewing machine. Izumi, her younger sister, slid the door open and stepped in. She asked, "What are you making?" Fumie said, "A skirt for Aiko. She needs summer clothes." Izumi said, "Did you hear? Father told Takashi it was OK." Fumie nodded. Izumi said, "What do you think changed his mind? Aiko choking on a marble?"

Fumie looked thoughtful. "You might be right. You know, when you were very young, you were very sick. The doctor didn't think you would live. And Genbee stuck his fingers in your mouth, and you started breathing again." Izumi said, "What? Really?" Fumie said, "Yes. Maybe this morning reminded him of that. He worries a lot about you."

Izumi wrinkled her nose. "Maybe I'll get a driver's license." Fumie said, "What? Why would you get a driver's license?" Izumi smiled. "Well, with Takashi getting married, I should probably help in the store. So driving from the school to the store would help."

The next day, Fumie knelt in front of the shrine. Genbee, Miyako, and Izumi sat behind her. Fumie told the picture of Toshi, her grandmother, that she had enjoyed her visit, and hoped that she would continue to take care of her family. Then Takashi stepped in and reminded her that she needed to leave soon to catch the train. Fumie turned, bowed to them all, and said, "I'm going, but will return."

When Fumie walked up to Shigeru's house, she stood in the street and smiled at the old house. Then she went inside.

In the entry way, she called out, "I'm back." Shigeru stepped in, and said, "Oh, you're back. Was Aiko good?" Fumie smiled. "Yes, she was very good the whole trip. And I have presents!"

Later, in the kitchen, Shigeru ate some of the sweets that Fumie had brought. He asked, "Was everyone healthy?" Fumie said, "Yes. And did you eat while we were gone?" He nodded. She looked around the kitchen and workroom. "I guess you cleaned up, too. I was worried..." Shigeru grinned. "Actually, I can do everything. But not having anyone to talk to? Especially to ask questions. That's hard." Just then, there was a squeal of gas. He said, "See? What was that sound?" Fumie said, "Well, it might've been a bird on the roof." He nodded his head. "So, going home was good?" Fumie said, "Visiting my family was good. But this is home."

This episode ended with another set of bits from the upcoming week. Shigeru and Fumie with a new magazine, Fukuzawa saying this is the new name, Inui talking about the wind, Michiko's husband in the war, Haruko telling Uraki that it's over, fighting in the bookstore, and Michiko climbing into a truck? Anyway, more to come...
