That's a lot of radish!
Jan. 28th, 2008 01:15 pmThe NHK lunchtime show usually includes a visit to somewhere in the country. Today's was a giant radish farm. And I do mean very, very big white radishes. The normal ones are 10 to 15 kilos (20 to 30 pounds), and the champion this year so far has been 25 kilos (roughly 50 pounds). The biggest in the normal yearly contest came in at 31 kilos - 60 plus pounds.
And according to the announcers trying the taste, they are sweet and juicy.
All I know is that they are enormous.
Oh, one other fun bit from the show was the farmer explaining how he plants. Basically, planting is by hand, a few seeds, top with dirt, and mash. But since that means a lot of stooping, he has a long pipe with a funnel on top that he uses to stand and drop the seeds down, another pipe for dropping dirt on top, and a masher on a handle so that he doesn't need to bend over at all. A bucket of seeds strapped over one shoulder, a bucket of dirt on the other side, and he's ready for planting. And quite proud of his tools - I got the impression he had come up with them himself.
