Endaka sales?
Oct. 30th, 2008 10:35 amThis morning one of the news shows here in Japan focused on endaka sales. Strong Yen Sales! Apparently many stores are having sales of foreign merchandise at reduced rates based on the yen/dollar exchange rate. So Philadelphia brand cream cheese is on sale, American meat is on sale, and so forth. They seemed to be showing about 1/5 to 1/4th reduced prices. Oh, and people are happily booking trips to Hawaii, too.
They did point out that the foreigners who are visiting Akihabara (electronics in Tokyo) are finding things more expensive. So while Japanese get cheaper imports, the strong yen also means fewer exports -- and Japan depends on that export trade pretty heavily. But today, at least, we can buy juice and spaghetti and wine on sale.
