Apropos of nothing

Just happened to think about an interesting oddity. Most of us know the song "YMCA" by the Village People.

The oddity is that this song is a very popular one on Japanese television shows, with everyone clapping and fashioning the YMCA signs with their arms. If you ask people here in Japan, they just think it is a fun song. I'm not sure they really listen to the words or know anything about the band.

And it is fun, so sing along!

On a folksong mailing list, someone joined to ask for more happy, cheerful songs like "Tom Dooley." In case you don't remember it, the first verse ends with "Poor boy, you're going to die." After that, it gets depressing.
