lj-cut only works in original posts, not in replies. Could that account for it? From what I've seen, you can put cuts in community posts - it just needs to be in originals, and then you only see them when you look at the community (or original post) in a friends page or recent posts page - if you go straight to the individual page, the cut is always expanded.
Yes and no - as long as the starting post has an LJ cut, you hide spoilers behind that, and anyone who actually goes and reads the post or its comments has declared that they're willing to read spoilers. The convention is that you don't put spoilers in a comment thread that didn't start with a post that says 'spoilers!'.
I'm not claiming it makes sense, I'm just reporting a rationale. For the amount of work an lj-cut takes, I'm willing to do it - actually, I'll tend to do it reflexively even for a spoiler community. I guess part of the reason I'll do it that way is because of the FOAF pages - I'd hate to have someone get badly spoiled by accident.
