One way to handle a break
Jan. 6th, 2008 09:26 amThe NHK daily drama had an interesting twist to handle the New Year's break.
Last Friday, the last day of their regular show before the New Year's specials took over, they ended with a major scene. The young girl sitting in her room waiting for him to come, sighing at the closed door. And behind her back, BANG! She looks around to see the wall cracking, then he kicks it over and climbs through the hole. He hugs her, and says," From now on, you are my home." And curtain, a little early.
Then they gave us several quick clips of upcoming scenes. Her and him asking someone to let them get married (I wondered who are they asking, and what is the response?). A couple of women saying "That's beautiful" with no hint as to what they were talking about. Just little teasers. See you next Friday!
So I wondered where we would resume? The answer on Friday, Jan. 4, was one brief shot of New Year's decorations and a voice comment about it being Jan. 3, and we see the heroine setting by herself dressed in a bridal outfit. A knock at the door, and her friend comes in. she starts to cry. What?
We got the rest of the story then through flashbacks as she tells her friend about the proposal that followed the hug, the whirlwind setup of the wedding, and ends with her fear that everything is going too smoothly, there must be a disaster looming. And sure enough, it seems that the groom has disappeared! But he turns up from the Bachelor's party, except now father is upset and declares that he isn't good enough for her, the wedding will have to be cancelled. At which point the heroine declares that now she is okay, she was worried that everything was going too smoothly. And the groom tells her not to worry, from now on he'll give her lots to worry about. And Mom reassures everyone that this is good, they're going to make a very good couple.
So - we ended with a big scene, kicking down the wall and declaring his love. Use teasers to make sure we come back, and then jump ahead to put us in the middle of another tense scene, backfilling as needed to bring us up to date.
This was just at half way through the 26 week show (which everyone calls a yearly drama, but this one is only a half year.)
