Eos, part of HarperCollins, is giving away free copies of Robin Hobb's book, Shaman's Crossing: The Soldier Son Trilogy, Book One during February (that would be now).

Go over to http://newsletters.harpercollins.com/W0RT0112058667661626D34A9A7060, fill in the info, and go to checkout. It will show $6.95 as the charge - enter EOS1 (that's a one) as the special code, and it will change the charge to 0. You don't have to enter credit card info (I didn't).

They offer Adobe, MS, and Mobi formats. I got the Mobi format, and it asked for my Mobi ID, so apparently they are using the DRM features (I think).

They say they will be giving away free ebooks every two months (celebrating their 10th year anniversary) but each one will only be available for free for a limited time - so check often? Something to check every now and then, anyway. Although you had to know the magic code for this one - ah, it's on the webpage, too.

They're definitely using the Microsoft Reader DRM - I had to send their support people a nasty e-mail. I don't know what MS Reader Registration I was using when I downloaded my previous book from them (it was one of LMB's Sharing Knife books), but the site kept telling me 'change to the credentials on file or start a new account'. Since the site couldn't tell me which credentials it had on file, this was not useful - if I created a new account, I'd loose access to my old books. I was pissed. I sent a lengthy e-mail expressing my displeasure and explaining that I was their target market for e-books (mentioning I'd only bought one from them while buying a hundred or so from Baen!), and that neither of those two options was acceptable.

The tech support person cleared my filed information, and I was able to pick it up. But it was still a pain.

And I've already run it through ConvertLIT, so now I've got a version I can read where I want to.
