Last week's rakugo show was pretty interesting. That would be March 3 to 8. The focus was the first student (Yusuke) who is a liar, and his first kosa (public performance). Along the way, they worked on what the heck little brother is doing, and set up this week's crisis (but subtly!).

Let's see. Monday: sitting in the bar, and the barber (a rakugo fan) asks when Yusuke's first kosa is going to be? Soso looks surprised, then says, well, three months would be good. And the barber says great, he's going to have a dinner party that month, and it will be 6 months after the teacher's death, so would you do the show? Sounds good - but that day, Soso already has promised to do a show at Tenguzan. And Kosojyaku says he'll do the show, and perform Hatena No Chawan (That Teacup).

And we're off to dinner with the family in Obama, where little brother and father aren't talking. But uncle insists that they might as well talk about it, and father asks what little brother intends to do (now that he's announced that he doesn't want to paint chopsticks). Little brother says he wants to study archeology, but understands that they don't have the money. Father gets indignant about at least talk to me.

And back to the school, where Soso says we'll start practicing tomorrow, and Yusuke says, "Yes." And the voice over has Kiyomi saying, "I didn't think that his yes might be a lie."

Tuesday: Soso and Yusuke starting to practice. Soso says, "Let's start the practice." Yusuke looks at him. Someone says, "What is he doing?" "oh." "How about Teppou Yusuke?" Shiso gives a little speech about what practice is, and how important. But when Yusuke starts he stumbles, can't remember. Says he's just nervous.

Kiyomi talking to the writer about it, who comments that it is like your first, maybe. Then Kiyomi is doing a bit of improv for the butsudon saleslady and the barber about eggs. Barber comments that it's good, but the young seem to like having a laugh track tell them when to laugh, not so much imagination.

So then Kiyomi brings the groceries in, and finds Yusuke cleaning the kitchen floor, while Soso yells that he should start practice. And Yusuke manages to drop the eggs, then insists on cooking them, postponing practice even more.

Kiyomi, Sogen, Shiso, Kosojyaku eating eggs, talking about what's wrong. Sogen says maybe he can't perform in front of people (echoing his own fears). Shiso comments that Yusuke is a liar, management is different. Kosojyaku starts asking to practice.

Kiyomi doing Chiritotechin at Tenguzan, and one of the other masters thanks her, comments that he would like to ask, but . . . about then, his student comes in and asks why she is doing that old stuff, she should do improv, and invites her to a show. They fight, while Kiyomi slips out the door.

As Kiyomi is sitting working on a kimono for Yusuke, there is a knock at the door. It is little brother. "Can I stay here a while?"

Wednesday: Mom worries with Grandma about what is happening to little brother. He meets Yusuke, and Kiyomi gets a phone call and asks her mom if something happened with little brother. Now Kiyomi worries, because she doesn't think she was paying enough attention to little brother.

Thursday: we get a longer ending to Hatena No Chawan, where the tea master, having bought the teacup, tells the story to a high official, then sells the cup in a box labeled Hatena for a lot of money.

Ako visits father, and we hear again how people are like painted hashi. Then back to the bar, where they are trying to come up with a stage name for Yusuke. When Kiyomi asks him what he would like, he announces that he can't do the show and runs off. Kiyomi follows, and he tells her he is scared.

Friday: Yusuke scared? Kiyomi assures him that it will be okay, and they go talk to the barber. The barber explains that he is leaving Osaka, and wanted one last good rakugo show.

Then in talking to brother in the garden, Yusuke admits that he could do the show, but he wants a more important audience for his first show. Soso and Kiyomi hear this. Kiyomi slaps Yusuke, tells him that every audience is important and you don't do rakugo by yourself. If that's what he thinks, he should quit now. And drags him to the bar to tell the barber himself why he won't perform.

Saturday: Soso looks at Yusuke and says Fine, you won't do a show for a year. Yusuke begs to be allowed to do the barber's show. Soso says no. then Kiyomi joins the plea. Soso says, "I thought you told him to quit?" Kiyomi says yes, but I'm his okami and he's trying hard, so please let him. Then all three go and ask the barber to let Yusuke do the show. The barber says sure, he just wanted a little rakugo. Mom comes, explains that she found underwear on sale, and Kayomi breaks in to say Mom was worrying about brother. Mom and brother head back to talk to father. Stage name? Kososo. And Kiyomi gives him chopsticks, which turn out to be the ones little brother made. Yusuke says they are very special to him.

And the show goes well, but… where is Kosojyaku?

We got to watch Yusuke try to avoid giving his performance to a dinner party, and get caught at it, thus learning that there are no small audiences. And that people are like painted chopsticks, you grind and polish them, and beautiful patterns come out.

Coming next week . . . what happened to Kosojyaku and his performance of Hatena No Chawan? He certainly was practicing.
