Apr. 19th, 2010 10:27 pma.k.a. slapstick at the wedding
Fumie in her white wedding outfit. And Miyako (mother) is fussing about the short over-garment. The wedding kimono provider is assuring her that this is the first time. Her assistant comes in, and says she phoned all the other shops, and no one has any longer ones. Miyako starts looking at the edges and says we could take out the stitches and let it out... Fumie points out the time. Miyako says let's hurry, and they run out.
Play the theme.
A car delivers the Murai family in front of a traditional building. The car drives off, and we see Shuhei, Kinuyo, and Shigeru lined up looking at the building. Except Shigeru is choking back a big yawn. Kinuyo says you can't be sleepy at your own wedding, and Shigeru explains that he was up most of the night thinking about a new manga. And yawns again.
Teruko (Fumie's aunt) is watching at the corner. She says to herself, "That's the bridegroom? What a big yawn!"
As Shigeru takes off his shoes at the entrance, Kinuyo, his mother, sees his toe sticking out of a hole in his sock. She says, horrified, "Shigeru! Your socks!" He looks down, then laughs and says I guess I was sleepy this morning and put on the wrong ones.
Moments later, Kinuyo goes into the bridegroom's waiting room. She's got a pair of tabi (the white socks to wear with a kimono. She says as she steps in that there weren't any socks, all they had were tabi. Shuhei and an older brother are eating and drinking tea. Kinuyo looks around. "Where's Shigeru?" The brother says, "Oh, he went out to look around. What are you doing with tabi?" She explains that Shigeru had a hole in his sock, and the brother laughs. Then Kinuyo explains that Shuhei should give her his socks, and wear the tabi. He refuses, saying that a suit and tabi would be ridiculous, and you can't have everyone laughing at the father of the bridegroom. The brother tells them to settle down, and they both look at his feet.
The voice over explains that this is an old temple, and they are rearranging the meeting room for the wedding, as we see a priest moving things. Shigeru comes in, looks around, and picks up a branch and waves it, saying it has a nice shape. Kinuyo is walking quickly through the halls, grumbling, and hits herself in the face with the socks in her hand. She comes in to see the priest and Shigeru sitting on the floor, with Shigeru saying something about the gods, and the priest congratulating him on his understanding. Kinuyo says come on, and he stands up and thanks the priest for his explanation. The priest says, "You're the bridegroom?"
Kinuyo rushes Shigeru back to their waiting room. Teruko (the aunt) watches them go in, and says to herself, "Why is his mother running around? Strange..."
Fumie is in her waiting room, and Teruko comes in. "Oh, Aunt, you did make it." Teruko grumbles about this is all happening too fast. And you're going to Tokyo? Miyako (Fumie's mother) says quit grumbling around the bride. The escort comes in, and says it's time. Fumie steps outside and stands in the doorway as the Murai family walks out of their waiting room. Shigeru is last, and looks at her. He smiles, just a little.
They proceed into the meeting room. It's tatami, with white campstools set up for everyone to sit on. One couple is watching, and the man comments that Fumie is very tall. His wife says not to say that. Teruko overhears, and says to herself, "That's what everyone will be saying." Then as she looks around, she sees Shigeru's brother, in his suit with white tabi socks. She says, "A suit with tabi? Very strange."
The wedding is Shinto, with the priest shaking a branch with paper and leaves over everyone. He chants to the altar, and Shigeru comments, "Only a god would understand that." Then the priest gives him a small white saucer, which he holds with his right hand. The priestess says, "Please use two hands" and he says, "The other one is fake." She apologizes, then pours some sweet sake into the saucer. He drinks it, in three sips. Then Fumie gets the saucer and sake. The drinking of the sake is the marriage vows, in the Shinto ceremony.
Next, we see an old-style camera. The camera man throws the black cape off, and asks Fumie to hold her fan in her hands. He asks them to move closer. Genbee says they look good together, but Miyako is still fussing about the over-garment being short. The camera man asks them to move closer, and the fan taps Shigeru's false arm. Fumie hears the "ting" and thinks that sound will ring through her future.
Next, at the party, everyone is eating and drinking. Shigeru is happily eating, then notices Fumie isn't eating and says she should eat. "You must be hungry." She says she really isn't, and he suggests loosening the obi (the stomach wrap). He laughs about weddings being very busy.
Genbee watches them talking, and points it out to Miyako. Teruko sneers about Shigru eating so much, and wonders why Fumie married him. Yukie (the good sister) says that Fumie said he was funny, and Teruko says, "Funny? He's not amusing at all."
Genbee is talking with Murai's relatives, saying they must be proud of Shuhei, since he went to Tokyo university. They laugh, and say, "Oh, we all expected a lot out of him, since he went there. Maybe he'd be a politician or famous. But he hasn't done anything."
Kinuyo says, "Shuhei, Fumie's father is talking with everyone. You should mingle, too." He says, "I can't, I'm still eating." She grumbles.
Shigeru straightens up, then there is a squeal as he makes gas. Reactions run around the room, with Genbee and Miyako saying, "Was that what I think it was?" and Kinuyo frantically fanning herself, pretending that she didn't hear anything. Fumie looks at him. He looks up, and says, "Oh. I'm sorry."
Fumie talls herself, "It can't be true."
