Toyokawa, the Shonen Land editor, and Funayama, the TV producer, sat at the table with Shigeru. Toyokawa said, "We've got a broadcast slot starting October 6." Shigeru said, "Wow, that's really soon." Fumie set tea cups in front of the men, and started to leave. Shigeru waved her into a chair.
Funayama said, "We were lucky. But can you get everything ready by then?" Shigeru said, "It'll be like rental manga deadlines. We can do it." Funayama said, "This is really going to help Shonen Land. I'll bet you reach that million." Toyokawa shook his head. "If we do, that's a stack of books 3 times as tall as Mount Fuji." Fumie and Shigeru looked at the ceiling, trying to imagine a stack of books that tall.
Izumi came in the door. "You've got a visitor?" She showed Kanou in. Kanou looked at them, and said, "I just heard. Congratulations. Devil Boy is going to be on TV."
She sat down and soon said, "Going from manga to TV is going to take some thought. I'm sure you're already thinking about it, but... have you made plans for a song?" Toyokawa said, "A song? Oh..." Kanou said, "I'm sorry, I know it's none of my business." Funayama said, "No, that's great. I don't think we'd thought about it." Kanou said, "Well, you want a song that's catchy, easy to learn and remember..." Funayama said, "Sensei? Could you write the lyrics?" Shigeru said, "Lyrics? I've never written a song." Toyokawa said, "Well, it's like titles and dialogue. I think you'd be good at it."
Later, in the workroom, Sugai, the clumsy assistant, asked Kurata, the man from Osaka, whether their names would be on the television show. Kurata said, "I guess, but why are you asking me? You should ask sensei." He stopped and rubbed his chin, looking into the air. "I wonder if they'll have Fumie's name on it." Komine said, "Well, television shows always have lots of names with them. But..."
Shigeru walked in, looked at them, and said, "More motion with your hands, less with your mouths."
Meanwhile, Fumie was on the telephone. She had called Genbee, her father. "Yes, it's going to be on television. October 6." She listened for a moment, then said, "Izumi is fine. Would you like to talk to her?" Izumi shook her head, and put a serving tray in front of her face. Fumie said, "Oh, I think she just left. But she's fine." Fumie hung up, then looked at Izumi. "Izumi! Why don't you want to talk to Genbee?" Izumi said, "Oh, I know what he'll say. Have I found work, why haven't I been looking more?" She shrugged.
Izumi said, "Isn't that person wonderful?" Fumie said, "Who?" Izumi said, "Kanou. She's very pretty, and she knows business, too. She's a real Tokyo woman." Izumi looked at Fumie and said, "You've been living here, but you haven't changed." Fumie said, "Even if you live here, you don't have to change." Izumi said, "Well, I'd like to try. Maybe instead of going back home in a year, I'll just work here."
At Fukuzawa's office, Kanou set her purse on her desk. Fukuzawa said, "So Devil Boy is going to be on television. That's great." Kanou said, "Yes, and soon." She handed a large envelope to Fukuzawa. "Here's Mizuki's latest for Zeta." Fukuzawa opened it and started looking at the draft. "This is really good." Kanou said, "With this television thing coming up, I think we should ask Mizuki for something special for Zeta. He really likes you, so he'd probably do it." Fukuzawa looked at the draft. He said, "Well, I think if he's got the television show and all that coming up, we should probably let him take a break from drawing for Zeta." Kanou said, "But you've had a long relationship with him. You can ask him to do more for you." Fukuzawa said, "Well, a long relationship. And not very much pay. No, I think we should let him take a break." Kanou turned and stared at him. "What? But with the monster boom, and television, we could make Zeta get much bigger." Fukuzawa looked at the window. "Bigger? Why would I want Zeta to be bigger?" Kanou gulped. Fukuzawa said, "If it was bigger, I couldn't help young artists. And that's what I want to do." He squeezed Kanou's shoulder. "I'll talk to him about it."
A young man came in the door. "Is this Zeta publications?" He had an envelope of drawings in his hand. Fukuzawa said, "Yes. Oh, you called. Sure, please sit down." He started talking with the young man.
Kanou stood nearby. She shook her head. "He's not going to do anything with this chance. That's... boring."
In the shopping center, Matsui, the wife who had turned cosmetics' saleslady, walked up to Yamada's store. The scale hung empty, the shelves full of dried mushrooms and vegetables, but there was no one in sight. Matsui called, "Hey, Yamada? What are you doing, leaving your store wide open?"
Yamada, the young shopkeeper's wife, poked her head through the doorway into the family area. "Mizuki is going to be on TELEVISION!" Miura, the third wife, joined her in the doorway. Matsui said, "Really?" Fumie pushed her head into the doorway from the other side, with a huge grin, and nodded.
The three wives were soon seated with Fumie around the round table in Yamada's living room. Matsui said, "So, they're going to make Devil Boy into a television show?" Yamada said, "Devil Boy? Wasn't that the scary one?" Fumie said, "Yes, but they're re-doing it. I think it won't be as scary." Matsui asked, "So where will it be showing? Tokyo?" Fumie said, "All across the country." Yamada said, "Oh, good, Michiko can see it. We have to tell her!" Fumie said, "Wait, I don't know what it will be like. It may not be good." Miura said, "What do you mean? It's by Mizuki, it will be great!"
In the coffee shop, Kameda, the pawnshop owner, talked to the coffee shop man. "Did you see the television magazine?" The coffee shop owner said, "About?" Kameda smiled. "Murai... Mizuki sensei is going to be television!"
A figure that had been sitting in a nearby chair with a copy of Zeta on its face suddenly stood up and swept the magazine onto the floor. Uraki looked at Kameda, who said, "Oh, you surprised me." Uraki put his hand on Kameda's shoulder. "You just said something about Mizuki?" Kameda said, "Yes, Mizuki's manga is going to be on television." Uraki frowned. "Which one?" Kameda said, "Uh... Devil Boy, I think." Uraki stepped forward, picked up Kameda's cup of coffee, and took a gulp. Kameda said, "That's mine!" Then Uraki clattered it down in the saucer and said, "That's bitter! Master, you should put more sugar in this."
Uraki stepped back. "Devil Boy? And they didn't talk to me. What..." Then he started to smile. "But if they're doing a television show, there should be some opportunities for me in there."
Fumie was in the kitchen when Shigeru wandered through the door. He was staring at a sheet of paper in his hand. He glanced up, said, "Coffee?" and pulled out a chair. He set the paper on the table.
Fumie started the coffee. Then she stepped closer and looked at the paper. "What's that?" Shigeru started to hide it, then shrugged and flattened it on the table. Fumie looked at the title. "The Devil Boy March?" Shigeru said, "Well, I started working on lyrics. It's a kind of march. But I'm not sure..." Fumie read through it. Then she said, "I'm not sure that the rhythm works in the fourth line." Shigeru pulled it back, looked at it, then said, "No, it works. It's good."
Fumie smiled, and said, "How about a shoulder massage?" Shigeru nodded, and she moved around behind him, rubbing his shoulders.
The afternoon of the day that the show was start on television, there were flowers in the office from Toyokawa and Funayama. Shigeru was at his desk, drawing. The phone rang, and Sachiko, his brother-in-law's wife who was doing accounts for the production company, answered it. "You'd like to talk to MIzuki-sensei?" She glanced at Shigeru, who shook his head. "I'm sorry, but today he is very busy. Maybe you could call later this week?" She hung up.
Shigeru finished working on a page, and lifted it. "Sugai? Could you erase this?" Sugai picked up the page that needed the pencil lines erased. As he held it, he looked at the flowers. Then he sniffed them.
Kurata yelled, "You're bending the page! Be careful." Komine said, "Today of all days, don't make a mistake." Sugai scurried over to his desk.
