a.k.a. don't fight

That day, Kitamura was leaving the house, with an envelope in his hands. He told Fumie, "Just in time for the deadline." She fanned herself and looked at the sky as he left. "Another hot day."

Inside the house, Fumie answered the telephone. "Oh, Genbee. How is everyone?" She looked at the baby sleeping nearby in a bent bamboo crib. "Yoshiko and Aiko are both doing well." Then she glanced around the room. "Izumi? I don't see her right now but she's fine." She listened for a moment. "Oh, you've got a marriage proposal for her? I'll let her know." Fumie hung up the phone, with a frown.

Outside the workroom, Sugai, the clumsy assistant, yanked Kurata, the intense assistant, through the doors and slid them shut. Sugai said, "Did you see that? Kitamura was here again." Kurata shook his head. "There was a deadline today, that's all."

Izumi came in. "Are you talking about work?" Sugai said, "Oh, no." She shrugged. "Can I clean up the table?" She started to wipe the table and pick up the teacups. She looked up at the two men. "Are you going to work late tonight?" Kurata said, "Probably. There's another deadline coming." Izumi smiled. "So I guess we better fix dinner for you. What would you like?" Sugai said, "I'll take fried rice." Izumi stood up and looked at Kurata. "I guess you're still thinking?" He said, "About?" She shook her head. "That present you were going to get me?" Sugai glared at Kurata.

Kurata said, "Well, I better get back to work."

Komine pushed the doors open and stepped in. He held a manga page in his hand. "I was just looking around the office and found this! Isn't it part of the package for Shonen Land? Sugai, how could you have left it out?" Sugai shook his head. "I didn't! I didn't have that." Kurata grabbed it. "Oh, no. I forgot this? We need to get it to them quickly." Sugai said, "See, it wasn't me!" Komine said, "Well, okay, but you have to admit it is the kind of thing that you do." Sugai frowned.

In the office, Kurata looked at Izumi, who held an envelope. "You really don't mind?" She shook her head. "That's what the driver is here for. I've wanted to visit the publisher, anyway." She started to walk away, then turned back and looked at Kurata. "That's two favors you owe me!" She grinned at him.

After she left, Komine steepled his hands on his desk and looked at Kurata. "You really shouldn't have made a mistake like that. Are you feeling all right? I think maybe you're working too hard." Kurata leaned on the desk. "No, I'm fine. I just... I made a mistake."

Shigeru came in and looked at the men in the office. "Is something wrong?" Kurata stepped away from his desk, and bowed. With his head down, he said, "I made a mistake."

At Shonen Land, Toyokawa, the chief editor, handed the envelope to Kitamura. "You forgot this. You need to check more carefully when you pick up a copy." Kitamura nodded. Toyokawa looked at Izumi. "Thank you for bringing it down. You could've called and Kitamura would have gotten it." Izumi said, "I wanted to see the office." Toyokawa smiled. "Well, here it is." Izumi looked around the office. It was hot, and some men had taken off their shirts and sat in their undershirts at their desks, fanning themselves with small fans in their hands. One man had his feet in a bucket of water. Several men were at a table reading a draft manga and laughing. It was noisy and crowded. Izumi said, "So this is where Shonen Land gets made." Toyokawa said, "Yes. Not very pretty, is it?" Izumi said, "I think it's great."

One of the men waved at Kitamura and said, "Why didn't you tell us that Mizuki had such a beautiful sister?" Another man said, "No wonder Kitamura spends so much time out there." They laughed as Kitamura blushed.

Izumi shook her head and said, "I better leave and not interrupt any more." Toyokawa said, "Either that or we'll find you a part-time job here."

As Izumi stepped out of the Shonen Land office, she heard a familiar voice. She looked across the hall and said, "Kanou? Is that you?" The well-dressed woman turned, and said, "Izumi? What are you doing here?" Izumi said, "Just bringing something they forgot. But what about you?" Kanou said, "Oh, just work."

Meanwhile, at Fukuzawa's office, the publisher of Zeta was sitting with a man in a dark suit. The visitor took off his glasses and folded them, putting them in his pocket. "I don't really like to do this, but as a representative of your financial backers, I have to ask you. Help me understand, what's the merit for us? Why all the new artist stuff?"

Back at the house, Fumie said, "Izumi, Genbee called this morning." Izumi shook her head. "You don't have to tell me. He always has the same questions. Yes I'm healthy, yes I'm working, no I don't want to come back yet. Oh! I saw Kanou at Shonen Land." Fumie said, "You did?" Izumi explained...

Kanou took Izumi to a coffee shop in the Shonen Land building. "I do some part-time work here." Izumi said, "What kind?" Kanou smiled, and pointed to a poster on the wall. "I'm working on that." Izumi turned and looked. "Young Woman? I've read that. It's good." Kanou said, "I come down once a week and work on it." Izumi said, "Along with working at Zeta? Isn't it hard doing two jobs." Kanou smiled. "It's hard, but I enjoy it. And it's good to have something extra." A man came up to their table and said, "Kanou? That was a great job you did on the magazine today. I did have a couple of questions." As he talked to Kanou, Izumi watched. She shook her head. Now there was a Tokyo woman.

As Izumi recounted the meeting, Fumie wondered if Fukuzawa knew that Kanou was working for another publisher.

Fumie looked at Izumi and said, "Izumi? I'm glad you ran into Kanou, but Genbee suggested that you come home soon." Izumi said, "I can't. Yoshiko isn't even one-year-old, and Aiko is going to start kindergarten soon. I'm just too busy."She smiled at Fumie. "Just tell him that you need me here, I'm sure he won't mind." Fumie said, "Well, actually, he wants to talk to you about a marriage proposal." Izumi turned away and started drying dishes. Fumie said, "It sounds like a good man, with plenty of money. He comes from a good family. It would be a good place for you."

Izumi said, "Just tell Genbee I need to help here. You need me to drive, to get groceries, for lots of things." Fumie said, "But I can hurry up and get a driver's license, and we'll manage..." Izumi turned around and shook her head. "I don't want to go."

Fumie took a step towards Izumi. "Is there... is there someone here that you like? Maybe Kitamura or Sugai?" Izumi chuckled. "Don't be silly." Fumie said, "Is there someone else?" Izumi turned away. "No. No one."

Izumi put the towel down and turned around. "If you don't need me here, I'll get other work. Toyokawa offered part-time work." Fumie said, "But you don't want that." Izumi said, "Maybe I do. I don't have to be a boring housewife like you all my life."

Behind them, Aiko said, "Don't fight."

Fumie and Izumi turned and looked at the little girl. Fumie said, "Oh, we weren't fighting." Izumi nodded.

Later that night, Fumie sat in the bedroom, fanning the two sleeping children. She thought about Izumi, and wondered what to do.

After a while, she went downstairs and made coffee. She brought it into the darkened workroom. Shigeru was on the telephone. "So Zeta needs some more work? I understand. Sure, I'll be happy to help." He hung up and rubbed his eyes.

Fumie said, "I brought some coffee." Shigeru looked up, and went to his desk. Fumie said, "If you have time, I'd like to some advice." He nodded, and said, "Put the coffee over there." Fumie set the coffee on the food table, and said, "Was that Fukuzawa?" Shigeru said, "Yes. There's some problems with Zeta." Then he gasped.

Fumie looked at Shigeru and realized that he was looking past her, and turned to look at the scheduling board. Shigeru said, "I almost forgot! The Kitaro lyrics are due tomorrow, and I still haven't finished it." He stood up. "I'll spend the night down here." He picked up a sketch pad and started into the other room. "Oh, what did you want to talk about?"

Fumie shook her head. "Nothing, really. It doesn't matter right now."
