Ohisama 4/5
They started off again with the mother telling Yoko that no matter what hard times happen, always smile. (kurushi -- hard, difficult, tough?)
Then the writing on the screen showed it was October, Showa 7 (1932). There is a festival going on in the countryside. The younger brother is shown trying sumo wrestling. One thing that is noticeable is that the Sudo family is dressed differently -- everyone else has country clothing, while Father wears a jacket and white shirt, mother has a kimono and waved hair, the boys have a school uniform and shirt and shorts, and Yoko wears a blouse and skirt. A young girl (Tanaka Yuki) asks if Yoko can go with her, and they go to paint the ojizosan. Meanwhile, the older brother is asked to help decorate some kind of a tower -- about three young country girls hand him colored wands that he tucks into strings, and seemingly giggle at him.
Next, Yoko and mother are walking, singing. The voiceover says that this was mother's favorite song, and that Yoko enjoyed singing it with her.
They stopped by the house, where the younger brother is making a paper and wood airplane. Mother asks if he would like to go walking with them, but he refuses. The voiceover says he wanted to play with the older brother.
Yoko and mother are out in the woods. Mother is breathing hard, and Yoko asks if she is OK. She says yes. Yoko shows her that if you listen to the stone here, you can hear the mountain breathing. Yoko says her friend taught her that. There's a small Shinto shrine above the stones, with a large stone decorated with a twined rope. They both try listening to the stone. Mother says you can hear the snow melt, and the wheat growing in the sun, if you are very quiet.
Back at the house, the younger brother tries to fly his plane, and it crashes. He sighs and sits down. The older brother comes in and says, "Where's mother?" The younger brother explains that she is out walking. The older brother looks at the younger one sitting there, then digs into his school bag and pulls out an old baseball mitt. He says, "Here!" and tosses it at the younger brother, who catches it, then looks at him. The older brother pulls out of baseball and tosses it in his hand. "I thought I'd teach you how to play baseball." The younger brother smiles and pulls on the glove. The older brother throws the ball, underhand, and the younger brother catches it. Then he grins, and tosses the ball back.
They show the family eating dinner together. Yoko and the younger brother make faces at each other until they start laughing, and Father says, "Don't tease each other while you're eating." They both try to keep a straight face, but they grin pretty hard as they continue to eat.
At school, Tanaka Yuki and Yoko sit together. They are listening to the teacher read. A boy is watching Yoko very closely, until he leans too far over and falls out. Everyone laughs, and the teacher says she didn't know it was that exciting. Then she asks Yuki to continue reading. Yuki reads a little bit farther. She closes the book. The teacher says that's really good, but that what's even more important is thinking about what might happen next -- imagining. She asks Yuki what she thinks happens, and Yuki says it probably snows. And then maybe they get stuck in the snow. But no matter how much it snows, they keep on going. Yuki looks embarrassed, having perhaps said more than she expected, but the teacher says that's exactly what she thought too!
Then the teacher looks out the window and says it's so beautiful outside, why don't we go out? Take your lunches and let's go. So they all put away their books and go outside.
The voiceover says that they all loved the teacher, Matsuko sensei. She has the class sing in the field, and they show them playing tag -- with Yuki and Yoko catching each other, then catching the boy who was interested in Yoko.
Then the teacher says, "All right, let's eat." Everyone sits down, but Yuki is walking around. Then she sits, by herself. It is evident that while most of the students have a lunch, she does not.
Yoko gets up and sits down in front of her. Yoko says, "My lunch is really too big. Will you help me eat it?" Yuki looks at her, then says yes. Yoko says, "Oh, good. That will really help me." Yuki starts to eat the food, and says, "It's really good. Did your mother make it?" Yoko says, "No, my mother isn't feeling well. So I made it. Do you really like it?" Yuki smiles, and says yes.
They did a brief flash to show the brothers eating the lunches that Yoko made. And her father, in a factory where they are unspinning silkworm shells and then spinning silk. He's also eating a lunch that Yoko made. Finally, in the house, mother opens a lunch that Yoko made. She looks at the food, and there are tears at the corners of her eyes.
After school, Yuki and Yoko are walking by the side of a creek. Yuki asks Yoko what she wants to do when she grows up. Yoko says she doesn't really know yet. Then she asks Yuki what she would like to be. Yuki says she would really like to be a teacher. Yoko says that would be really good, you like to study, I could really see you being a great teacher. Yuki sighs and says, "Yes, I want to be a teacher, but I can't be." Yoko says, "Why?" Yuki squats down and tosses a rock into the creek. "When you finish elementary school, are you going to go into middle school?" Yoko says, "Of course." Yuki says, "I can't. My family says I need to work. So I'll never be a teacher."
The voiceover says, "I couldn't believe how unfair this was. Yuki loved to study, and was good at it. But because her family needed her to work, she couldn't do what she wanted to."
Yoko stood beside the creek and looked at Yuki. Yoko started to cry. Yuki looked up at her, and said, "Oh, don't cry. It's not that bad."
